Our Story

Welcome to Duluth Millworks!

Founded in 2022, Duluth Millworks began with a singular mission: to repurpose the rich, historic wood from the Globe Grain Elevator in Superior, Wisconsin. This iconic structure's timber holds a story, and we are dedicated to preserving its legacy through thoughtful craftsmanship and sustainable practices.

As we've grown, so too has our commitment to sustainability and innovation. While our roots are firmly planted in reclaiming historic wood, we have broadened our scope to include a diverse range of reclaimed materials. Our passion extends to other eco-friendly wood practices, such as thermally modified wood, which enhances durability and longevity while minimizing environmental impact.

At Duluth Millworks, we believe in the beauty and integrity of repurposed materials. Each piece we create is a testament to our dedication to quality, sustainability, and preserving the stories embedded in every section of wood. Our craftsmanship transforms these materials into unique, enduring products that honor their past while contributing to a more sustainable future.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We invite you to explore our work and discover how our commitment to heritage and sustainability can add value to your projects.

Warm regards,

A Little History: Old Globe Elevator

The wood of the Globe Elevator originates from the old-growth forests of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, featuring trees aged 125 to 250 years. This virgin timber, characterized by its tighter grain, was used during the construction, which began in 1885 and finished in 1887. As the world's largest terminal elevator at the time, it utilized about 4 million board feet of Eastern White Pine and had a storage capacity for over 3 million bushes, playing a crucial role in supplying food to millions in America and beyond. Duluth Millworks is dedicated to preserving and repurposing this historic wood, ensuring its legacy lives on in each custom creation. Each piece crafted by Duluth Millworks not only embodies the beauty and resilience of reclaimed wood, but also honors its rich heritage rooted in the industrial history of the Great Lakes region.
